A Thank You, Shingle by Shingle
Every year we replace one roof, free of charge, for a veteran nominated by the people who know them best. One home. One crew. One enormous thank you.

A New Roof for a Hometown Hero

Veterans gave us shelter through their service. Once a year, we give it back the only way we know how, with a brand new roof, on the house.

If you know a veteran in our community whose roof has seen better days, tell us their story. The neighbors, family, and friends who nominate them are the ones who get them in the running.

Last Year's Recipient

See the Roof We Gave Away

Watch the moment one local veteran got the news, and see the work our crew put in to make it right.

The Process

How It Works

Three steps from nomination to a brand new roof for a deserving veteran.
1

Nominate

Tell us about a veteran in our community who deserves this gift. Share their story, their service, and what a new roof would mean for them.

2

Verify Eligibility

We confirm each nomination meets the basics. A verified veteran, in our service area, with a roof that genuinely needs replacing.

3

Reveal

From every eligible nomination, we draw one name at random. Our crew shows up, does the work, and gives back to someone who gave first.

Shelter for Service FAQ

Any honorably discharged veteran of the United States military who lives in our service area. We cover the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding counties, including Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta, Albemarle, Bath, Highland, Nelson, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Lexington.
No. The spirit of Shelter for Service is recognition from the people around the veteran. Nominations need to come from a family member, friend, neighbor, or other community member who knows them.
Multiple nominations are welcome, but they don't change the odds. Each veteran enters the random draw once, no matter how many people nominated them. Same chance for every veteran, no popularity contest.
After nominations close, we confirm each entry meets the basics: verified veteran, in our service area, with a roof that needs work. Then we draw one name at random from every eligible veteran. Same odds for everyone.
A complete residential roof replacement on the veteran's primary home, free of charge. That includes tear-off, materials, labor, cleanup, and our standard workmanship warranty. The veteran pays nothing.
We close nominations and review every story carefully before reaching out to our chosen recipient. Once we've confirmed with them, we announce publicly. Anyone who nominated will hear from us.
That's perfectly fine, and pretty common. We'll reach out to them directly if they're selected, and we'll work with you to make the reveal special if you'd like to be part of it.
Call our office at 540-885-6514 and ask about Shelter for Service. We're happy to talk it through.
